Hailing from Provo, Utah Arhythmatik (pronounced “arithmetic”) is one of underground hip-hop’s most prominent up-and-coming artists. Arhythmatik has gained a name for himself as an innovative producer and emcee in the underground hip hop scene through several independent releases. Involved in the hip hop culture since age 8, Arhythmatik is no stranger to hip hop. He combines clever, substance-filled rhymes with solid, uniquely-sampled beats, which he produces entirely by himself. He has been noted for his extremely witty verses and musical creativity, while still keeping an ear to the street. In the spirit of artists like The Visionaries, Swollen Members, and Mars Ill, Arhythmatik comprises the truest elements of hip-hop in his style, as he remains loyal to rap as an art form. A devout Mormon, Arhythmatik’s clean lyrics and lifestyle are a breath of fresh air in today’s depraved hip-hop industry. Arhythmatik has garnered a large following of fans throughout the country and continues to gain advocates from all areas of the hip-hop community with each track he releases. With his insightful lyrics and inspiring ballads, Arhythmatik is leading the movement towards positivity in hip hop. Arhythmatik releases his music on independent label Modurn Languaj Asosiashun (pronounced ‘Modern Language Association’). The future of hip hop is here. The future of hip hop is Arhythmatik.

Well- now that you think I’m this dope, popular underground hip hop artist, below is basically how my real life has gone. Below is everything you never wanted to know about me (or didn’t care to know about me- or didn’t know that you cared to know about me- or didn’t care to know that you cared about me. Wutevers- read on.)
1976-I was born Clayton Douglas Call in Provo Utah, September 7, 1976 to Doug and Gale Call, the first of four children (the freshness begins). I think I was caught running down the street with no pants on at one point during this year.
1980- Given the nickname “Cocoa” because when asked what my name was, I couldn’t pronounce “Clayton” and responded with “Cocoa.”
1979- My family moved to El Paso, Texas where I lived until 1982 (word 2 big bird- big ups to my El Paso creeps).
1981- Moved to the big city of Cortez Colorado (yes, a hip hop mecca).
1984- Got really into B-boying and breakdancing- mostly popping. Almost won the school b-boy battle or “breakdancing contest” as it was called haha. I would break during every recess on the cardboard box we would set up. Now I completely suck because I’m old and my body disagrees with dancing…. and I’m ok with that
1989- Performed my first “rap” show for our Jr. High with my homey Korby Lee. It was Cortez, Colorado’s first introduction to hip hop. We did a battle-type rap back and forth with no music. When we were done, people just sat there looking at each other and didn’t clap or anything. They had no idea what we just did.
1990- My friend Korby and I started a mobile DJ’ing business and began trying to record some music.
1991- My family moved to Bloomfield, New Mexico and I started developing a great appreciation for the Southwest culture and my Mexican heritage.
1992- Me and my cousin, Taylor (T-rix or Skrappy) recorded a bunch of corny hip hop songs… really, really corny. But it was dang fun.
1993- Realized I was the only Mormon, part-Mexican, hip hop artist on the planet. I realized I was pretty weird to most people in the city of Bloomfield, NM. (You gotta remember- ALL hip hop was still viewed as gangsta music on the fringes of society at this point.)
1994- Me and my best friend Lee Atcitty (aka CharLee Brown) started a group called “1/2Breedz” cuz I was part Mexican and Lee was part Navajo.
1994- Parents got divorced. Not cool.
1995- Graduated high school from Bloomfield High School.
1995-Tell Tale Music, a small artist management company out of San Francisco expressed interest in “1/2Breedz” and paid for us to record several songs in the studio.
1995- Reported to the Missionary training center Sept. 20th. to start my 2-year American Sign Language LDS mission.
1996- After 3 months in Ontario California, I got transferred to Baltimore Maryland with another sign language missionary- Wesley Joe Maynard. (ASL missionaries get transferred all over the country)
1996- Baltimore was ILL. I loved it there. We lived deep in the ghetto. I loved the people there and just fell in love with the east coast inner-city culture.
1997- Got transferred to the windy city of Chicago, Illinois. It was WAY different there but it was mad fun. My first area was Dekalb Illinois (NIU campus). Then I got transferred to the southside of Chi-town. That was dope. Except for the gangs (GD’s and Blackstones) that harassed us… oh yeah and the racism from all angles. Wack.
1997- Returned home from the mission back to Bloomfield, New Mexico on September 22. The mission was the greatest experience of my life.
1998- Went to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. I recorded two more songs with Charlee Brown and started putting the moves on my future wife, Jessica.
2000- Realized Utah sucks. Moved to Arizona where I had a few friends and could make some good $$ sign language interpreting.
2000- Realized Arizona sucked cuz I had no Jessica. Went back to Utah and married Jessica in the Salt Lake City temple on July 22.
2000- Realized marriage with Jessica sucked, but decided I was going to do anything to make it work.
2000- We moved back to Arizona where I started working at and taking classes at Arizona State University and where Jessica started her master’s degree in social work. I also started working at ASU’s campus radio station as a DJ assistant to one of the stations only hip hop DJ’s, Fabel.
2001- Started hosting my own hip hop radio show called “The Hip Hop Life Show.” I began recording some more songs, including “The Way of Life”, “Southwestylez”, “Undaground Elite”,and “Rock the Beat” (featuring Spanish Phly, which made it to #2on the mp3.com charts. Woohoo! if you remember mp3.com you are old skool like me). “Undaground Elite” even got played on the radio in Orlando, FL.
2001 Fabel and I released a compilation album called “Scorpion Kingz: Southwest Hip Hop Collection Vol. 1”. The album was pretty popular and was even featured in The Phoenix New Times and The State Press. The album featured my song “Southwestylez” and a bunch of other AZ artists.
2001- Released “Classic” (an EP of all the songs I had recorded to date) under the artist name COCOA LOCO
2002- Changed my name to “ARHYTHMATIK”. I was much more of a conscious artist and the name “Cocoa Loco” just wasn’t fitting the style of hip hop I was creating. Wanna know how I came up with that name ARHYTHMATIK? Yeah, me neither. But I’ll tell ya anyways. The concept behind the name “ARHYTHMATIK” is derived from the word ‘arithmetic’. Everything in the world is created and based on mathematics- especially hip hop music. Math is an absolute truth. It never changes. This represents the morals and gospel that Christ taught. I decided to spell it differently and incorporate the word “rhythm” in there cuz I’m clever like that.
2003- Started MODURN LANGUAJ ASOSIASHUN with some good friends I met on Sphereofhiphop.com– Scott Allen and Paconaut. Jessica and I also moved into our first house in Avondale, AZ.
2004- Me and Jessica had our first kid on May 3rd, 2004. Alexander Aliseo Call and I never knew I could love something so much until he was born!
2004- Performed with The Procussions in Phoenix.
2005- FINALLY finished the Pre-Algebra EP!! Which is actually just a re-make of my“Classic” EP and a few extra songs.
2005- Performed with The Shapeshifters, LA Symphony, and Future Shock in Long Beach, California. This was really my first big show.
2006- MG! The Visionary joined the MLA roster. Did a GRIP of shows all over AZ, NM, and CA as well as a few mini tours.
2006- Started a monthly event at ASU called “FINAL FRIDAY FUNDAMENTALITY” which would run for a full year and 3 months straight.
2006- Sold our house in Avondale and moved to Goodyear, AZ. MOVIN ON UP…(or so I thought)
2007- Realized I could no longer justify to my son leaving at night to perform at clubs with alcohol. So I committed to not do any shows where alcohol is present. Shut down my Arhythmatik MySpace page for the same reasons. (Yeah MySpace was booming at this time.)
2007- My second son Camden Cancio Call was born July 5th. He is an amazing individual and lights up the place with his laugh and smile! I love being around that kid! Love him so much!
2007- Hooked up with a fellow LDS hip hop artist, DJ Ry-Know to do a show at the Glendale Boys N’ Girls Club (thanks to my step-brother Stephan). It was the most fulfilling show I’ve done.
2008- Having kids has really taken it’s toll on music. Marriage is really on the rocks. I just don’t have the time and energy like I once had. I’m still plugging along trying to finish up my “Equations” album. It’s all done– just need to put a few finishing touches on it.
2009- Shiz hit the fan with my marriage and it all came crashing down. I also lost my job at ASU as a sign language interpreter because they closed the interpreting department due to budget cuts.
2009- We all decided to move to Utah. The hardest decision I ever had to make in my life up until this point. I love AZ.
2010- Lost the house in Goodyear, AZ.
2010- Divorce was finalized in September.
2010- In August, I started a monthly hip hop jam called “Life Elevated” with Anthony Ambriz (Urban Media Lab Productions) and DJ Shawn Phillips. We focussed on showcasing the positive aspects of the 4 elements of hip hop culture- MC’ing, DJ’ing, B-boying, and graffiti art.
2010- Began releasing 1 song each month.
2011- You thought there was going to be some grand finale to this story where I got signed to Corporatemusicrulestheworld Records and I am now on my way to the top? Well, sorry to disappoint you. I’m just a normal cat like you trying to make it. Each year, I plan to take the 12 songs I released as singles and make them an album. I am planning on marketing those albums to a national audience via college radio, touring, etc. Currently, the songs I am releasing each month will become the “Equations” album.
So what are you waiting for? Join the Arhythmatik bandwagon and cop some music! Had enough boring stuff?? I hope so, cuz I sure have.
